Edmonton company develops world’s most energy-efficient pump jack drive system. First pump jack drive in the world approved with new technology to return waste energy to the electricity grid.

Canada Control Works Inc. recently received the first ever approval for a pump jack drive system to generate electricity from falling oilfield pump jacks. This new Alberta-developed technology recovers energy similarly to the regenerative brakes on a hybrid car. This drive system reduces energy usage by 40%, reducing associated carbon emissions for electricity by 20 tonnes per year per typical well site, at a cost competitive with conventional drive systems.

“The Enersaver Pump Jack Controller is the first truly cost-effective energy-efficiency technology for conventional oilfield lift systems.” Says Michael Lesanko, Vice President of Products for CCW Inc. “The Enersaver PJC reduces electricity consumption, reduces peak demand and, most importantly is the first drive system to put electricity back on the grid from the kinetic energy of falling pump jacks. This will be a huge boon, environmentally and economically, for Alberta oil producers.”

The recent approval of the Enersaver PJC as a “micro generator” by the Alberta Utilities Commission is the first time in the world that an oilfield drive  system has been approved to regenerate electricity back onto the grid.
